Vodafone Launch 5G In The UK

Vodafone UK has today announced the launch of its 5G network across seven cities in the UK heralding a new dawn in mobile connectivity.

Why 5G?

With ever-increasing demands on the mobile network and an insatiable appetite for more and more data consumption, 5G is the fifth generation of mobile internet communications and designed to address the exacting demands of both businesses and consumers.  5G will also introduce a number distinct benefits with ground breaking implications for us all.

  • Faster data speeds
  • Higher network capacity
  • Lower Latency

5G technology will deliver speeds up to 10 times faster than 4G providing much quicker downloads for everyone. The radio frequencies involved will also provide much higher network capacity allowing people to stay connected when in large crowds or busy areas, and last but not least, one of the main benefits of 5G technology is that it presents much lower latencies for users.

In other words, 5G users will have seamless access to their vital applications with virtually no lag time at all. The impact of these benefits are being tipped to revolutionise a whole host of new applications and technologies to take advantage of super-fast, (almost) real-time, and reliable mobile connectivity.

The advancements in 5G technology are tipped to be a critical enabler for the fourth industrial revolution.

With 4G viewed as the era of the smart phone, 5G is poised to become the era of Smart Technology and the Internet of Things with more widespread connectivity between devices, machines and buildings.

#5GameChanger

Following reports from business customers that mobile data allowances are a limitation on their business, Vodafone has also introduced a range of groundbreaking "Business Unlimited" plans. With a choice of three "Business Unlimited" tariffs, SME businesses with less than 50 employees will now have absolutely no limit on the amount of data they can use.

The real gamechanger is that any SME business in the UK will be able to avail of the new unlimited data allowances, even if they don't reside in a 5G enabled area.

Vodafone 5G In The United Kingdom

Initially, the seven UK cities to be connected to Vodafone's 5G network are Glasgow, London, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Cardiff and Bristol. 12 more cities will also be connected before the end of the year, including Birkenhead, Blackpool, Bournemouth, Guildford, Newbury, Portsmouth, Plymouth, Reading, Southampton, Stoke on Trent, Warrington and Wolverhampton.

With Vodafone owning the second largest mobile phone network on the planet, today's announcement, launching 5G in 7 cities and with 12 more to come, is also more than any other network in the UK and will also allow roaming in 4 countries this Summer with more to follow shortly.

5G In Action

At the launch, Lewis Hamilton, five times winner of the Formula One Drivers' Championship, switched on Vodafone's 5G network and demonstrated a range of 5G enabled technology.

  • Virtual Reality Stadium Sport's Demo demonstrating how sport's fans will soon be able to experience that 'big game' sensation from the comfort of their own sofa.
  • Water Leak Detection allowing Water Utilities a quicker and more accurate way of detecting leaks in order to meet strict regulations and environmental standards.
  • Smart Training For Healthcare Professionals with immersive Virtual Reality allowing much safer and more accurate training for high risk, life or death situations.
  • Connected Coffee Machines letting users know if stocks are low or there are problems they need to attend to.
  • Improving The Quality Of Wine Production through a mix of IoT technology, satellite imagery and climatic sensors to allow vineyards to manage their crops more effectively.
  • Vertical Farming using 95% less water than traditional agricultural methods to deliver higher crop yields and reduce environmental impact.

Whilst a lot of talk about 5G verges on the brink of sci-fi, the introduction of 5G promises to bring many more advantages to our everyday lives - many of which have yet to be invented!

The future is exciting and whether you see 5G delivering productivity and efficiency gains for your day-to-day business, new 5G technology transforming your business processes, or how your business could use 5G to invent new technologies or augment existing products or processes, the opportunities are endless for UK businesses to grasp 5G and all of the benefits it offers.
